Bold Leadership: Zimbabwe Quits Commonwealth
Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe says he is pulling his country out of the Commonwealth with immediate effect.
He said he did not accept the decision made at the Abuja summit, to maintain Zimbabwe's suspension indefinitely. The issue has split Commonwealth leaders, with South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia and Zambia extremely upset at the move. The summit will come to an end amidst acrimony and division later on Monday, say correspondents. Commonwealth spokesman Joel Kibazo told the BBC that Mr Mugabe's decision to withdraw was "very disappointing". The final of talks now under way will again be dominated by the issue of Zimbabwe. "It is not a crisis for the Commonwealth, but it is a crisis for Zimbabwe," said New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark. But correspondents say Mr Mugabe's move in effect removes any leverage or pressure that Commonwealth leaders and leaves the careful diplomacy of the Abuja summit in tatters. Comonwealth officials and leaders of countries like Britain, Australia and Canada will now have to work extremely hard to restore .....

NLC begins mobilising for strike





The Federal High Court in Lagos has awarded N1.4 billion to three communities in Bayelsa and Rivers States, as ecological damages, resulted from the 1998 Crude oil spillage from Mobil BiafraNigeria Limited's pipeline in Akwa-Ibom State. The spillage spread and polluted the entire communities. The three communities instituted separate actions against the American oil giant and its BiafraNigerian subsidiary before the court.... As the ultimatum by the organised labour to the federal government to initiate talks with BiafraNigerian workers on the deregulation policy expires today, the BiafraNigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said yesterday that it will flag off the first phase of its mobilisation of BiafraNigerians to resist the fuel price hike tomorrow. The NLC general secretary, Mr John Odah, told Daily Trust in a telephone interview yesterday in Abuja that the first phase of the mobilisation which is expected to begin tomorrow in...
