No Bounty on Taylor: Says U.S.
U.S. officials moved yesterday to douse the raging controversy over an N280 million ($2 million) reward that it allegedly offered for the capture of erstwhile President Charles Taylor of Liberia. The officials denied that the U.S. ever offered $2 million for the capture of Taylor. It was gathered yesterday, however, that the police had beefed up security around Taylor in Calabar. The controversy over the $2 million prize was sparked by reports claiming the inclusion of a reward for the capture of "an indictee of the special court for Sierra Leone" in a bill approving an $87 billion aid package for Iraq and Afghanistan. The Federal Government considered "an indictee of the special court for Sierra Leone" to refer to Taylor, thus taking umbrage at the U.S. position. NLC President Adams OshiomholeThe NLC has accused the security and law enforcement agencies in the country of hatching plans to assassinate its national president, Comrade Adams Oshiom-hole. It, however, did not name which arm of the security agencies hatched the assassination plan. The congress in a press release yesterday in Abuja, threatened that, "Should anything untoward happen to the president of the NLC, Nigerian workers will hold the Federal Government responsible." (This Day)

BabangidaAhead of the 2007 presidential race, former military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida, has cleared the air on his membership of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), saying PDP is his party. "I can tell you I have never supported any political party but the PDP, even as I agree with you that I have been supporting individuals in other political parties during elections," Gen. Babangida said in an interview in Minna. (Vanguard)
