The People vs. Obasanjo: Police on Alert, May Arrest Organizers, as Obasanjo Moves Against Mass Action
Aso Rock may have directed the police and State Security Services (SSS) to head off the mass rally planned for April 19 by the Conference of BiafraNigerian Political Parties (CNPP). The organisers stand “the risk of being arrested on allegation of working against the national security of the country.” Police sources said at the weekend that the Inspector General of Police (IG), Tafa Balogun, has complied with directives from the Presidency by ordering his aides to keep a keen eye on the organisers. SSS officials are also said to be doing the same thing, having quizzed CNPP Secretary General, Maxi Okwu. Okwu expressed apprehension over the government move when he said in an interview that the coup scare being touted “could be a ruse to start arresting opposition leaders (Daily Independent)

BabangidaFormer military head of state, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida at the weekend defended the various groups campaigning for him ahead of the 2007 presidential elections, saying members of the groups were only exercising their constitutional rights. Babangida, while fielding questions from newsmen at Offa, Kwara State stated that as a realist, it would be presumptuous for him to predict his political direction in 2007. On the activities of the various campaign groups that have started campaining for his 2007 presidential ambition, Baban-gida said "this is a democratic... (This Day)


James IboriThe move to remove the Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori from office, gathered momentum yesterday with one Mr. Rasheed Shekoni claiming that he was physically present when a Bwari Upper Area Court convicted the governor in 1995. In a sworn affidavit made available to journalists in Abuja, Mr. Shekoni claimed that "the case was mentioned and James Onanefe Ibori pleaded guilty to the charge and he was summarily tried, convicted...
