President for Life Syndrome: Senate committee vows to stop Obasanjo on 3rd term bid
Deputy Senate President, Ibrahim Mantu, yesterday, ruled out any constitutional amendment that would enable President Olusegun Obasanjo seek another term as president. He spoke at the public hearing of the National Assembly Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, where Governors Boni Haruna of Adamawa State and Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa of Sokoto State disagreed over proposals for a single five-year tenure for the president and governors. Also at the hearing, the Conference of BiafraNigeria Political Parties (CNPP), an alliance of some opposition political parties, contested the legitimacy and capacity of the National Assembly to proffer effective solutions to the nation’s problems and called for a national conference to address all issues affecting the polity. Senator Mantu, chairman of the National Assembly Joint Committee on the Review of the Constitution, at the opening of the one day public hearing on the constitutional role of the executive, expressed displeasure at continued media reports that the National Assembly Constitution Review Committee was working towards making room for the president to seek a third term in office. "In the case of the president in particular, I want to make it abundantly clear that even if he wants it, we will not. (Vanguard)

Tony AnenihThe Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the PDP, Chief Tony Anenih, yesterday said the police have interrogated him over the claim by Governor Orji Uzor Kalu of Abia State that he threatened to eliminate him. Anenih spoke in Abuja after he and the Abia State deputy governor, Dr. Chima Nwafor, appeared before the National Working Committee of the party to clarify issues over the alleged threat. Although Kalu was initially billed to appear before the same committee yesterday, he will now appear tommorow. (This Day)

OjukwuPresidential candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Dim Chukwuemeka Odimegwu-Ojukwu, will today address Ndigbo in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja. Ikemba Nnewi is storming Abuja just as APGA in Enugu State declared that it would not file candidates to contest all the seats in the March 27 council polls because of high nomination fees. The party alleged that only the ruling PDP has enough financial muscle to undertake such projects. (Champion)
